Transporting Batteries by Sea
(incorporating Lithium batteries)

Purpose

If you send batteries by sea, particularly Lithium batteries or cells, then this is the course for you. This course assists shippers of batteries, including Lithium Cells and Batteries, to interpret and apply the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Dangerous Goods Code to shipments being sent by sea domestically and internationally. Full compliance with the Regulations and an understanding of the concepts behind them will ensure the safety of all who travel and protect shippers from unknowingly committing unlawful acts. This also covers packaging, marking, labelling and documentation for road transport in Australia.

Courses stay active for 2 years and must be completed within this time frame. Refunds will not be given after the course in no longer active.

What you obtain

This course will help you apply the classification, packaging, documentation, marking and labeling requirements of the IMDG regulations with regards to batteries, and in particular lithium batteries, thereby providing an understanding of the requirements set down by the Regulatory authorities.

A Quick Course Syllabus

The course covers:

  • Classification - Wet, dry or non-spillable batteries, Ion/Polymer or metal, Cell or Battery;

  • Identification - Individual batteries or with equipment;

  • Packaging requirements;

  • Marking and Labeling requirements;

  • What documentation is required;

  • Road transport shipper requirements (not cartage);

  • Access to a copy of the IMDG is not required, however is recommended. You can enter and leave the course as many times as you like without losing what you have done.  You will also have access to the course content until you require re-certification.  

 

Courses should be started and completed within a three month period of initial registration or before your existing certification expires to ensure validity.

Course Qualification and Recognition

This course meets the requirements of the:

The International Maritime Organisations Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG), training requirements 1.3.1.2 and 1.3.1.5.

​

A certificate is issued on successful completion of an end-of-course questionnaire and the qualification is valid until the next IMDG Code become mandatory. 

​

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for people involved with the packaging, documentation or control of commercial shipments of batteries, including Lithium batteries, sent by sea.

​

Level of Competency

No previous knowledge or experience with sea transport is required to complete the course.  Basic computer skills and English comprehension is needed.

System Information

Platform: The course and course software is designed for lap top, tablets or desk top computers. Even though content can be viewed on other mobile devices, such as phones, functionality will be greatly reduced and is not recommended or supported.
To view content on an android device or ipad the Free Articulate app needs to be downloaded onto your device.  Follow the prompts from your device.

Course Progress: Each module must be completed before the final assessment is made available. Participants can enter and leave the course content as many times as they like and the course progress will be tracked, highlighting the last module completed when logging back in. 


The final assessment must be done in one sitting.  If the assessment is closed a new assessment will be generated and all previous questions will be replaced. The final assessment must be done in Internet Explorer as it is in Adobe pdf format.
